Bedlam Cube Press Release

GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS DAY
WILL BE BEDLAM!

Press Release 19/08/2006

The Bedlam Cube – the new three-dimensional puzzle phenomenon sweeping the nation – is this year’s official product to be associated with the global Guinness Worlds Records Day on Thursday November 9.

The record attempt sounds simple …13 different geometric shapes that have to fit together into the shape of a 4 x 4 x 4 cube in a clear box. The fastest time recorded on the day will be the first Guinness World Record for the cube.

The Guinness World Record attempt will take place at world famous toy superstore Hamleys of London in Regent Street. To mark the special event, Bedlam Puzzles are reducing the cost of their ‘solution’ to the product to £5 from £10 to encourage even more people to attempt the record.

To date less than 200 people have solved the Bedlam Cube, claimed their golden certificate and right to purchase an exclusive genius gold cube! This is despite the company selling well over 100,000 cubes in just 18 months. The 3-D Tetris style puzzle actually has 19,186 different solutions, but to find one is mind-bogglingly difficult – but thousands are taking up the cube challenge daily!

Danny Bamping, Managing Director of Bedlam Puzzles said:

“It is very exciting for us to be involved with the Guinness World Records Day. As yet there is no official record – but on November 9 there will be. It will be exciting to see if anyone can do it in less than 10 seconds – I know it can be done!”

Craig Glenday, Editor-in-Chief of Guinness World Records said;

“We are excited to have the Bedlam Cube as our official product for Guinness World Records Day on November 9. It’s a brilliant product and we think it’s the perfect puzzle to engage everyone as part of the worldwide record attempts happening on the day. We’re looking forward to finding out who will become the first official Bedlam ‘speed cubing’ champion of the world!”

Notes to Editors:

BEDLAM CUBE GUINNESS WORLD RECORD ATTEMPT GUIDELINES

The record for the fastest time to assemble a Bedlam Cube is based on the quickest time it takes an individual to put all 13 pieces back into the box correctly and solve the puzzle.

1. The cube used should be a standard, authorised Bedlam Cube

2. The normal or mini sized version of the cube may be used.

3. Any of the 19,186 solutions can be used for the record attempt(s).

4. The Bedlam Cube must be tipped out on a clear surface by an independent person and the 13 pieces distributed randomly in front of the person making the attempt.

5. No more than 30 seconds must pass between the pieces being tipped out to the time the clock starts for the attempt.

6. The attempt must be timed by an experienced timekeeper using a highly accurate stopwatch.

7. The time starts when the player picks up the first piece of the Bedlam Cube.

The time ends when the player places the 13th piece into place in the clear box to complete the cube and solving the problem.

The Bedlam Cube History:

Plymouth-based entrepreneur Danny Bamping, 32, famously appeared on the 2005 series of Dragons’ Den with his Bedlam Puzzle Company and had the dragons fighting over each other to invest. After some clever negotiations Bamping initially accepted a deal on camera for £100,000 in exchange for 30 per cent of his company to two of the Dragons – after a brief period of due diligence Danny changed his mind, opted to go it alone and funded his Bedlam dream with a bank loan.

Last Christmas, every retailer – including Hamleys - that stocked the Bedlam Cube completely sold out! The company has since secured deals with some of the UK’s largest retailers for this coming Festive season including WHSmith, John Lewis, Tesco, Debenhams and Argos. Smaller retailers such as Toy and gift shops are also stocking the Bedlam cube.
