A recently launched 3-D puzzle cube is claimed to be educational
and can help improve people’s spatial awareness and hand-eye
co-ordination. The idea of the Bedlam Cube is simple; players
must try to fit the 13 different geometric pieces back into a
4x4x4 cube. With thousands of cubes sold already, the Bedlam Cube
is becoming one of the must have gadgets for 2005.
Initial trials have shown that people of all ages are fascinated
by the puzzle and have caught the “Bedlam Bug”. Players
often get so close to solving the puzzle that they just don’t
want to put it down. All you need to do is fit the thirteen pieces
back into its box. Puzzle experts are claiming it to be ‘The
next Rubik’ – whose 25 year anniversary is this year!
However in Hamleys last Christmas Bedlam outsold the Rubik by
5 cubes to 1!

learn how to plan and solve problems. Play encourages them to
develop spatial awareness and to use imagination and creativity.”

Teacher John Wilson from Annan, Dumfriesshire, Scotland has been
using the Bedlam Cube in some of his lessons: St Columba’s
in Annan is one of a handful of schools who have introduced the
cube into the classroom – many more are already following.
“The Bedlam cube provides a series of problem solving situations
that the children find both challenging and rewarding. The children
seem to work beyond their frustration levels. One girl sat for
an hour and a half attempting to get her head around it and was
quiet as a mouse.” He added “I firmly believe concentration
levels in the classroom have improved as a result of the introduction
of the Bedlam Cube.”
Plymouth based Danny Bamping, the entrepreneur behind the Bedlam
puzzle company, said: "The Bedlam Cube is unique in many
ways, for instance it has 19,186 different solutions, so every
time it's attempted the experience is completely different, it's
a British invention and it has absolutely no packaging. People
have compared playing the Bedlam cube to an endless game of 3-D
Tetris, hence why it is so addictive and appeals to all ages!”
The Bedlam Cube was recently successfully launched at Hamleys
of London last Christmas and on the internet through its website
www.bedlamcube.com. It is also now available from the British
Science Museum and the popular Silver version is now on many gadget
& gift websites. The Bedlam Cube goes on general sale this
summer and is likely to be a big hit this Christmas!
