Made Plastic Toy This Christmas!

The Bedlam Cube -- the unique 3-D puzzle cube -- is launching its 'British Made' range at the country's leading toy store Hamleys and exclusively on the internet on Friday (23rd November 2007).  The Devon-based puzzle company took the decision to manufacture in the UK just last year in order to reduce its carbon footprint and have more control over production.

The unique puzzle became a global hit two years ago after featuring on the BBC business show Dragons' Den, demonstrated by the company's Managing Director Danny Bamping.  The original foreign-made cube is now widely available at major high-street retailers and toy shops.

More than 85% of the world’s toys are now made in China and the bold decision by the Bedlam team to reverse the trend and invest in a UK manufacturing base has been been welcomed by industry leaders and green campaigners. The Bedlam Cube and the company that sells it now has a greatly reduced impact on the environment and is better placed to respond to changing market demands.

Danny Bamping said: “When you carefully consider the processes and travelling involved from source to the end-user for each product and the cost implications -- not just financially but also to the environment -- they are considerable and in my view unnecessary. The Bedlam Cube is a British invention, a British brand and British company. Now we are manufacturing it in Britain too – it’s a great achievement and a positive forward step.” 

Danny is so passionate about bringing toy manufacturing back to the UK to provide employment opportunities and improve quality control processes that he has launched ‘UK Manufactured’ which, in addition to the Bedlam Cube, will produce a range of British made toys, games and puzzles and encourage other companies across the country to do the same.

The Bedlam Cube already has no packaging, its wooden versions are made from sustainable rubber wood and the only company vehicle is an electric hybrid.

Manufacture of the cube is now centred on a state-of-the-art plant in rural Wiltshire.  Danny added: "It is a complete contrast to the vast industrial manufacturing plants of China with images of smoke-filled industrial blight coming to mind.  Bringing production back to the UK means we are on hand to ensure that our products are of the right quality, without the consumer having to pay any more for a UK-produced product. As a consumer and businessman I can see a huge benefit in having ‘Made in the UK’ stamped on the bottom.”
